The April Series Round 4 of FNC saw a number of our regulars return to defend their positions on the scoreboard, as the April series comes close to the end. We had the Siberia Corner taken out of the track set up, cutting a new straight from Dead Man’s Bend, through to the switchback.
Group A’s grid started off with Darcey Ackenna in pole position followed by Alex McChesney in 2nd, David Outhwaite in 3rd and Clifford Swift in 4th. This was one hell of a race between the 4 drivers, switching positions the entire race. It all came down to the last lap between the 4 drivers, all coming around the last corner with Alex McChesney out in front and managing to take the victory. Closely following behind was Outhwaite taking 2nd place followed by Ackenna in 3rd then Swift in 4th.
Group B was made up of a number of our regular racers and it showed in their racing. The grid had Paul Hynd starting in pole position, Tim Ovens in 7th and Michael Perry down the pack in 9th. All drivers were chasing the victory; however no one could catch our leader Hynd. Ovens then came in 2nd; also getting the quickest lap time of the race with 48.34sec, which is a brilliant lap time for this track! Michael Perry was then 3rd in, gained a whopping 6 positions throughout the race.
The grid for Group A’s Heat 2 had Izaak Hubner starting from pole position and we definitely saw some hard racing from him, however unfortunately was no match for Darren Maller and Alex McChesney, who both started off towards the back of the grid. McChesney, starting 11th, had the whole grid covered, gaining an amazing 10 positions to take out the chequered flag. Maller was next in, gaining 4 positions to take 2nd and Hubner took 3rd.
Nathan Lucas is one of the ‘Gun Drivers’ we’ve spoken about in the past and he is still racing hard every week. Heat 2 of Group B saw Lucas starting in pole and he whipped out some impressive driving to hold that place and take out the victory. Keishi Ayukai started the grid in 4th place and got right up behind Nathan, however just couldn’t quite get passed him so settled for 2nd place. Perry came in 3rd again for this heat, even after spinning out and losing 2 positions, only to make a clean recovery and gain them back.
Group A’s final was a very challenging race with Ackenna staring 3rd, Maller starting 5th and Outhwaite starting 7th. This race was awesome to watch and was one of the closest races we’ve seen in a long time. Our 3 front runners were bumper to bumper for the duration of the race, however when it came to the last lap, it was Maller that managed to pull away, with his perfect racing line out of the corner, which gave him extra speed on the straight to take out 1st place. Outhwaite followed behind in 2nd and Ackenna finished us off in 3rd.
Group B’s final was also another brilliant race with Ovens starting the grid in 2nd place, and maintaining his position to the end and Weber in 6th, crawling up 3 places to finish in 3rd position. The number 1 spot on the podium was taken out by our ‘Under Dog’ Steve Sleswick, who started the grid in 7th place and raced his way through the pack up to 1st place to hold the position for the remainder of the race.
We also need to make a special mention to our new leader of the scoreboard, knocking Rocket and Waldon off their perch… Congratulations Stewart Matthews. Final round for the April series is up this Friday night and with only 90 points between 5th and 1st place, it’s anyone’s trophy!
